BIOGRAPHY
Gregory I. McHuron is a plein-air painter, working in oil and gouache. He primarily paints wildlife and landscapes, through out the United States and Canada. He was born in Syracuse, New York and was raised in Colorado, Wyoming, Alaska and California. He always wanted to be an artist and began sketching at an early age.
He graduated from Oregon State University, in 1968, with a Bachelor’s Degree in Art, as well as being schooled in Forestry and Fisheries and Wildlife. After graduating, he worked as a designer and Art Director for an interior design firm, before moving to Jackson, Wyoming in 1973, to be close to the subjects he prefers to paint. He has been painting full time since 1975.
His work has received many awards, among them the 2003 Colonel H. “Red” Smith Award from the National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, WY. His work has been purchased for major collections, including the Ella Carothers Dunnegan Museum in Bolivar, Missouri; National Museum of Wildlife Art in Jackson, Wyoming; Bennington Center for the Arts in Bennington, Vermont; Jackson Hole and Greater Yellowstone Visitor Center in Jackson, Wyoming; Holland and Hart in Denver, Colorado; and the Leighton Foundation in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. His work has been in major shows including the National Wildlife Art Museum, CM Russell Show, Society of Animal Artists shows, Oil Painters of America, and Cheyenne Frontier and Western Art Show. His work has been featured in the Wildlife Art News, Southwest Art Magazine, Art of the West Magazine and in other publications.
He has taught workshops, given demonstrations and participated in quick draws for a variety of organizations including Wyoming Artists Association, Windriver Artist Association, Scottsdale School of the Arts, The Lodge at Palisades, National Museum of Wildlife Art,, CM Russell Show, Grand Teton National Park, and Isle Royale National Park.
Greg travels extensively, as he prefers to paint on location. “I prefer painting on location as much as possible as the drama and excitement which occurs all around me is difficult to recreate in a studio environment. When I paint the rapidly changing scenes, I try to put into each of them the feelings and excitement I felt while watching the scene unfold. If I can capture that particular feeling, I know that those viewing my works will come to feel some of the emotions and excitement that motivated my wanting to record this particular fleeting moment. I’m a firm believer that an artist should live in an area which has the subjects they want to paint—to surround themselves with their subject thus to better understand them and to paint them with knowledge.”
His painting trips have included traveling to the Artic Circle; southeast Alaska, wilderness trips in the Thoroughfare and Wind River Range of WY; the Colorado Rockies; Banff and Jasper National Parks in Canada; the cost of British Columbia; Alert Bay, Vancouver Island, and the Queen Charlotte Islands in Canada; and a 3 week trip floating down the Colorado River in Grand Canyon NP.
